The difference between BYOS and VPN services.
Why is BYOS better than a VPN?
- BYOS is about Protection, Control, and Access. VPNs are just about access.
- VPN doesn't protect the endpoint, just the traffic.
- VPN doesn't protect the inbound traffic, only outbound.
- The VPN can encrypt the outbound traffic successfully, but it will still be fooled by network attacks.
- VPN depends on (and is controlled by the OS).
- The OS can still communicate from outside the VPN.
- The endpoint leaks traffic until the VPN is established.
- Access control within VPNs is light at best.
- VPNs require key & config management/exchange with the end-user, BYOS doesn't.
- VPNs are heavily dependent on the remote VPN Terminator, BYOS provides decentralized protection.
What can a VPN do that BYOS can't?
- Save you money on hardware (sometimes).
